12 years uninhabited island-life

 Born 1762 or 1761 He was a sailor at Tosa province in the Edo period .
 The drifting to Tori-shima and an uninhabited island-life January 1785, A ship -the bulk of the ship is 300 koku (about 83.4 cubic meters)- transported straw rice-bags by sea from Akaoka-village, Tosa Domain to Tano-village.

 But when returning to Akaoka-village(Tosa),  the ship was caught in a terrible storm off the coast of Tosa province.
 
 And, the ship became a drifting ship with being dismasted and a rudder. It is presumed that the drifting-ship passed and crossed off the coast of the waters of the Muroto Cape. the ship rode on the waves of the Kuroshio Current.
 
 
 As a result, they were cast ashore on the coast of Tori-shima.

 When being washed ashore, there were 4-crewmans in the Tori-shima.  But 3-crewmans deceased one after another by malnutrition within two years after being washed ashore. Since then, Chōhei was forced a solitary life in uninhabited island. Something to eat was eggs and meats of the Short-tailed Albatross that lives in the uninhabited island and a little marine products.
 At first, they had not a source for making a fire.
 
 
 So, he had eaten eggs, meat and marine products in the raw. They made the food preserved of meats of the Short-tailed Albatross by dehydration for off‐season's main source of nutrients.
 
 
 About a drinking water, they used a rain water for the source of water supply.  They had kept rainwaters into many eggshells of the Short-tailed Albatross in store.
 
 3 years later from that they being washed ashore, 1788, the ship of Osaka was washed ashore to the Tori-shima. And 2 years later, 1790, the ship of Satsuma was washed ashore to the Tori-shima. the number of the inhabitants of the Island was increased to over 10 people.
 
 They completed pots, kettles and carpenter’s tools.
They had lived communally under Chōhei and 2-shipmen of two ships as leaders in the island.
 They did systematically to secure stable food supply and construction work of dwelling-houses, road-improvements, a storage-reservoir, etc. But one third of them deceased with a malnutrition and a mental disability.
 
 
 Several years passed since being washed ashore to the island, there had been no sign of a ship around off the coast of the island. And then, they helplessly set to construct a ship for returning their home.
 They had gathered wood-materials of a shipbuilding from parts of wrecked-ships which being washed ashore to the island. About nails, they made a fireplace ready for melting old nails and anchors. They had divided the work among a number of people. Several years later from setting constructing a ship, they completed a 30 koku-sized sailing ship which covered with patches. All hands 14-survivors boarded into the ship. The ship had sailed for days and days. Soon the ship finally reached to
 
 
 Chōhei and his group, they were transported by a chartered-ship of the Tokugawa bakufu to Edo after being subjected to examination at a magistrate's office in Hachijō-jima(island) of Izu Province.

 They were subjected to a real examination at the Kanjō-bugyō and the Tosa Domain office in Edo.
 
 After finishing a real examination in Edo, Chōhei and his group dissolved.
 And started their homeward journeys. These records of a real examination has remained in history.
 
 January 19, 1798(Japanese era Kansei 10), Chōhei returned home in Tosa province.
 Its homecoming was a re-integration into society after an interval of 13 years. On this day, the twelfth anniversary of Chōhei's death was in the middle of holding at his home. When he returning to his home, he was 37 years old. After that, he was permitted to give his surname as Nomura from the Tosa Domain.
 
 
 He was nicknamed"Mujin-toh" after returning.
Its meaning is"uninhabited island".
 It was not long before Chōhei was blessed with good children and wife.
 In 1821(Japanese era Bunsei 4), He ended his 60 years life. His nickname"Mujin-toh Chōhei" was engraved his tombstone in Kishimoto, Kagami, Kōnan-city, Kōchi prefecture. 
 
 
 His tombstone has been designated as a historic spot of Kōnan-city. The bronze statue of Chōhei was built in front of the Kagami Station on the Tosa Kuroshio Railway.
